A Night Of Upset

UEFA Champions League :
A night of upsets:

Champions League holders Barcelona slumped to a stunning 2-1 defeat at home on Tuesday to Russian champions Rubin Kazan on a night when seven of the away sides came away with a point or better.
Liverpool were another to suffer as having gone 1-0 up before half-time they slumped to their fourth successive defeat - their worst run in 22-and-a-half years - 2-1 to Lyon, with Cesar Delgado netting in time added on.
Both Barca's domestic rivals Sevilla and English Premier League giants Arsenal all but assured themselves of a place in the knockout stages as Sevilla romped to a 3-1 victory away at German side Stuttgart with Sebastien Squillaci notching a double.
Group G rivals Rangers look down and out after suffering their second successive heavy home defeat - 4-1 to Romanian debutants Unirea Urziceni, coached by former Chelsea star Dan Petrescu.
Arsenal meanwhile were held at 1-1 in Holland by AZ Alkmaar - whose owner's bank went bankrupt on Monday - as a Cesc Fabregas goal looked to have given manager Arsene Wenger an early 60th birthday present as he prepares to blow out the candles on Thursday.
Wenger's side top Group H with seven points from three matches, a point clear of Olympiakos, who were the only home side to buck the trend by winning - a 2-1 victory at home to Standard Liege.
However, while Wenger may be upset to have conceded the late equaliser AZ have just two points and Standard a point.
There were a record amount of early goals in the eight fixtures, indeed it was a record for the competition as five went in in the first six minutes.
Debrecen's Peter Czvitkovics was one of them becoming the first Hungarian in nearly three years to get on the scoresheet as he stunned Fiorentina within two minutes.
Both Inter Milan and Barcelona were behind early on.
The Italians twice had to equalise with Argentinian defender Walter Samuel getting their second shortly after half-time after his team-mate Lucio had scored an own goal to give Dynamo Kyiv a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Barca had former Inter hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic to thank for putting them back on level terms with Rubin Kazan shortly after half-time as the Swedish star netted to rub out Alexander Ryazantsev's second minute effort.
However, unbelievably it was the visitors who appeared to take strength from this and struck with a second goal through Gokdeniz Karadeniz 17 minutes from the final whistle.
Inter's Serie A rivals Fiorentina also had to come from behind away at Hungarians Debrecen but they then pulled away to lead 4-2 at the break with Adrian Mutu scoring a brace.
It was enough to keep Fiorentina in second place in their group, three points behind Lyon with Liverpool facing a real struggle to qualify.

UEFA Champions League

Barcelona stunned by Kazan :

Cham-pions League holders Barcelona slumped to a stunning 2-1 defeat at home on Tuesday to Russian champions Rubin Kazan - their first in the competition in 10 months - on a night when seven of the away sides came away with a point or better.
Liverpool were another to suffer as having gone 1-0 up before half-time they slumped to their fourth successive defeat - their worst run in 22-and-a-half years - 2-1 to Lyon, with Cesar Delgado netting in time added on.
Despite the alarming run Liverpool’s Spanish manager Rafael Benitez was defiant even in the light of the boos ringing out when he replaced goalscorer Yossi Benayoun.
‘We have done it before and we have to do the same,’ said Benitez referring to having bounced back before.
‘We have to be ready for the next game, try and win that, then the same with the other two. We have done it before, we have to have the confidence we can do it again.’
Lyon now look as good as in the next stage although coach Claude Puel was suitably eager to downplay over-confidence. ‘There is still a lot of work to do,’ he insisted.
‘We are going to savour the victory tonight and enjoy the moment, it’s a great feeling. It is great to put in a good performance at this historic stadium. You can sense the history as soon as you walk in here and it was superb.’
Both Barca’s domestic rivals Sevilla and English Premier League giants Arsenal all but assured themselves of a place in the knockout stages as Sevilla romped to a 3-1 victory away at German side Stuttgart with Sebastien Squillaci notching a double.
‘We know how to suffer,’ said Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez.
‘We were leaders and we knew we had to win if we were to stay leaders,’ added Jimenez, whose side have nine points from a possible nine.
Group G rivals Rangers look down and out after suffering their second successive heavy home defeat - 4-1 to Romanian debutants Unirea Urziceni, coached by former Chelsea star Dan Petrescu.
Rangers manager Walter Smith was left deeply frustrated by the hammering which included two own goals.
‘We, after getting off to a great start, didn’t really impose ourselves on the game,’ said Smith.
‘After that we lost three goals which at any level of football we shouldn’t be losing. All-in-all it was a disappointing evening for us.’
Arsenal meanwhile were held at 1-1 in Holland by AZ Alkmaar - whose owner’s bank went bankrupt on Monday - failing to give manager Arsene Wenger an early 60th birthday present.
Wenger’s side top Group H with seven points from three matches, a point clear of Olympiakos, who were the only home side to buck the trend by winning - a 2-1 victory at home to Standard Liege.
However, while Wenger - whose birthday is on Thursday - may be upset to have conceded the late equaliser AZ have just two points and Standard a point.
‘It is frustrating because we felt superior to this team and had a good performance but couldn’t take advantage of our chances,’ said Wenger.
‘In the final minutes we got caught. That is the Champions League. We need focus for 93 minutes. We made one mistake and we paid for it.’
Inter’s coach Jose Mourinho refused to be cowed by dropping the two points.
‘The equality in this group is a positive thing. The Rubin result is good because it leaves everything open,’ he said.
‘It means that when we get to the last match we won’t know who has qualified so when Barca play Dynamo at the end it will be a decisive game for them too.’
Barca had former Inter hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic to thank for putting them back on level terms with Rubin Kazan shortly after half-time as the Swedish star netted to rub out Alexander Ryazantsev’s second minute effort.
However, unbelievably it was the visitors who appeared to take strength from this and struck with a second goal through Gokdeniz Karadeniz 17 minutes from the final whistle.
Barca coach Pep Guardiola was philosophical about the defeat which sees them sharing top spot with Rubin and Dynamo while Inter are a point behind.
‘Any team can beat another one in football,’ said Guardiola. ‘It is a strong group with four league champions and we have to fight until the end to progress.’

UEFA Champions League

UEFA Champions League
Jose stays confident

Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho claimed there are no favourites in his team's Champions League group after a 2-2 home draw against Dynamo Kyiv left the Italian champions bottom of the pile.
All four teams in Group F are separated by just a single point though with Barcelona, Rubin Kazan and Kyiv all on four points and Inter on three after three games.
What also makes the group stand out is that it is the only one of the eight Champions League groups to include four teams who are champions of their country.
"There's no favourite. We have the chance to qualify. With three teams on four points and one on three, eight or nine points should be enough to qualify," said Mourinho.
"I didn't expect us to have only three points after three games, of course I expected more but the difference between a draw and a win is minimal.
"This group is very difficult but we already knew it would be. There's four teams who are champions of their country and if you compare it with other groups it's clear that other teams have been more fortunate whereas we four teams have been unlucky, but that's the way it is and we'll fight to the end."
The group picture could have looked very different if Barcelona had won at home to debutants Rubin but the Russian champions' stunning 2-1 win at the Camp Nou has left everything in the balance.
Mourinho was asked if it would have been better for Barca to win, allowing them to run away with the group while leaving Inter's rivals for second place with fewer points.
But the former Chelsea boss explained that if reigning champions Barca were to qualify in advance it would make their last game, away to Dynamo, meaningless for them, making it easier for the Ukrainians to get a result.
"The equality in this group is a positive thing. The Rubin result is good because it leaves everything open," said Mourinho.
"It means that when we get to the last match we won't know who has qualified so when Barca play Dynamo at the end it will be a decisive game for them too.
"Every match is one where every result is possible. We have three draws and of course this one is the worst because the first was against Barcelona and the second was away, but it's difficult for everyone."
The draw means Inter have won only two of 11 Champions League games under Mourinho, continuing the club's dismal trend in Europe's premier competition despite their dominance at home.
But the Portuguese said it was too early to suggest his team has a psychological block when playing in Europe.
"Wait a little while, we're only halfway through, there's three more games and we'll talk after them. I think my team will qualify," he said.
Kyiv twice took the lead through Taras Mikhalik and a Lucio own goal but Inter pegged them back through Dejan Stankovic and Walter Samuel.
Even so, with two home games and only one away match left, Dynamo coach Valeri Gazzaev insisted they were in with a good chance of progressing.
"It's a good thing to be playing two more games at home. It's a very difficult group, Inter and Barca are great teams," he said.
"We can do it but there's still everything left to do. Rubin and ourselves have shown ambition but we have young players who still need more experience.
"We played well today but it's difficult to be thrust straight into such a hard group."

Airtel Champions League T20

The Airtel Champions League Twenty20 : is an international Twenty20 cricket competition between clubs from India, Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and West Indies. The Twenty20 Champions League is chaired by Lalit Modi, who is the Chairman and Commissioner of the Indian Premier League and Vice-President of the BCCI. The competition was launched in 2008 as a response to the success of national Twenty20 domestic cricket leagues, most notably the Indian Premier League.[1] The first edition was set to take place from late September to early October 2008 in India, after the tournament organisers resolved various teething problems that had put the inaugural tournament under some doubt,[2] but it was later announced that the tournament would be held from December 3 to December 10, 2008.[3] The tournament was postponed again following terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008[4] and later cancelled,[5] with the first tournament now scheduled for October 2009. Indian mobile service Bharti Airtel has bought the title sponsorship rights of the champions league for the reported amount of Rs. 170cr (USD 37 million).[6]

Background
Main article: Twenty20
An international tournament for domestic cricket teams is believed to have been first mooted by Lalit Modi, vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 1996, Lalit Modi is also the chairman and commissioner on the IPL.[7] The launch and subsequent success of Twenty20 cricket some years later was the influence behind a serious effort to get such a tournament off the ground. Twenty20 cricket was launched by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003.[8] Its launch was a result of a long-term decline in the popularity of county championship and domestic limited-overs cricket. By reducing the number of overs per innings to twenty and by placing a three hour limit on matches, the format was designed to attract a younger crowd and to boost attendances.[8] Twenty20 proved a success, with an international version, International 20:20 Club Championship, launched in 2005 and a World Twenty20 Competition held in September 2007. This proved much more popular than the 50 over Cricket World Cup had been just five months previously.[9] The following year, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was launched, proving that there could be a market for a big-spending domestic Twenty20 cricket league.[10] The success of Twenty20 and the IPL lead many commentators to suggest that other forms of cricket would suffer, with some worrying about the effect of the popular fast-paced 'slogging' game on players' abilities in Test cricket.[10][11]
Immediately after the end of the first series of the IPL, the cricket authorities in England, India, Australia and South Africa entered into discussions to create a new international club competition, to capitalize on this success.[1] The new tournament's $2.5m winning prize was described as "unprecedented" in cricket.[1] A number of different formats for the tournament were considered, with original proposals containing a much lower prize fund.[12] The T20 Champions League's creation was announced on 7 June 2008, along with the announcement of planned restructuring of some of the domestic cricket tournaments involved, including the introduction of franchising in South Africa, England and Australia.[7]
Format
Qualifying
Although the 2008 tournament was originally rumoured to only include teams from Australia, South Africa, India and England, it was announced on 4 July 2008, that two teams from Pakistan's domestic tournament were also invited. At the same time, England's participation was also put into doubt, following differences between the ECB & BCCI over the inclusion of rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) players.[13] For the 2009 tournament, the winners of Pakistan's domestic Twenty20 tournament were prevented from taking part as their government had barred travel to India.[14] The competition was confirmed as being open to:
• The winners, runners-up and third placed team of the Indian Premier League in India.
• The winners and runners-up of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash in Australia.
• The winners and runners-up of the Standard Bank Pro 20 Series in South Africa.
• The winners and runners-up of the Twenty20 Cup in England and Wales.
• The winners of the State Twenty20 from New Zealand.
• The winners of the Stanford 20/20 from West Indies.
• The winners of the Inter-Provincial Twenty20 from Sri Lanka.
Tournament
The 2009 Champions League will be contested by 12 teams. It will start with a round robin format, with 4 pools of 3 teams. The top 2 teams from each pool will advance to a league stage, consisting of two pools of four teams. The top two from each league will progress to a knock-out competition of two rounds. A total 19 matches will be played over a 16 day period.
